Pain & Injury Treatment

We have treated thousands of people over the years with a high degree of success. Our patients have included people from all walks of life including many health care professionals - physicians, nurses, naturopathic physicians, acupuncturists, nurse practitioners, dentists, chiropractors, massage therapists. We have treated people with minor injuries too many military veterans who have sustained major injuries due to war. Our experience with pain and injuries is extensive.

Most people have a simple question. "Can you help me". After all, that’s what it is all about.  It’s why you are reading this, it’s why I am in practice.  Nothing is more important than the answer to this question.  If you are like many people that come to our clinic, you have tried many approaches, possibly chiropractic, physical therapy, surgery, medications, etc., yet you are still in pain.  You are frustrated and that is understandable.  Although I cannot guarantee results, I can tell you that almost everyone that comes in with a pain related problem will experience near immediate improvement, typically with complete or near complete relief within seconds.  I am so confident, that if you are not happy with your first treatment, if you don't feel better before you leave, there is no charge.  As far as I know, there is no one else that makes an offer like this.  You have nothing to lose except for your pain, and everything to gain.

We are excited to offer you a variety of highly effective treatments, (including acupuncture and multiple non-acupuncture treatments) to help improve or eliminate your pain or injury. We have been specializing in the treatment of pain and injuries since 1992, and we bring you not only expertise and decades of experience, but also a variety of treatment options. Everyone is unique, and as a result, the typical "one size fits all" approach does not provide you with the best possible outcome.   Our expertise, our extensive experience, and our treatment options, make us different, a difference we are proud of.

Whether you came to us first, or have tried every other treatment you can imagine, and are here out of desperation, there is an excellent chance we can help.

Acupuncture is a treatment method that dates back thousands of years and is capable of treating a wide variety of health problems and also is beneficial for maintaining health.  One area where acupuncture excels is the treatment of pain and injuries.  In most acupuncture practices, the treatment of pain and injuries represents the majority of the patient population.  Although different forms of healing have much to offer, for example Chiropractic and Physical Therapy, I believe you will find acupuncture to be extremely effective, cost efficient, and quick to provide results.  Acupuncture is not simply a symptomatic treatment.  The goal is to address the underlying cause of the pain.

The mechanism of action, or put differently, how acupuncture works, has been studied extensively.  For additional information please see the explanation under Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine, on our home page.  Numerous studies, outcome based clinical trials, blinded trials, etc., have shown acupuncture to be very beneficial.  Many of these studies can be quickly accessed over the internet.  The NIH office of Alternative Medicine, Medline and others are good starting places.

So what type of pain does acupuncture treat?  The list is actually rather extensive, but commonly treated problems include:

Low back pain
Neck pain
Shoulder pain / Frozen shoulder
Headaches / Migraines
Plantar Fasciitis
Muscle pain & Tightness
Hip pain
Carpal Tunnel syndrome
Knee pain
Numbness & Tingling

This list is not inclusive of all pain related problems treated with acupuncture.  If you have a question about what acupuncture can treat effectively, please send us an email, call or come in for a free consultation.

Distal Acupuncture (Balance Method)

Distal acupuncture, also known as the Balance method, as taught by Dr. Richard Tan, (actually this style has been around for thousands of years) is a style of acupuncture  that is extremely effective for treating pain related problems.  The vast majority of people with chronic pain will experience substantial or complete resolution of their pain.  Conventional wisdom states chronic pain isnot resolvable, but in fact most cases can be effectively treated.  The typical experience from receiving distal acupuncture is near immediate reduction or elimination of pain, often times within a few seconds of beginning treatment.  It is normal for the pain to return and then be treated again, with several treatments typically necessary to effectively treat or resolve the pain.  Although all styles of acupuncture have much to offer, distal acupuncture is the most impressive and effective style for pain related problems I have seen and utilized.  Have questions?  Send us an email or give us a call.

Pain Neutralization Technique

"Here is a hands on technique that heals the multitudes"  Robert Rowen, MD  Second Opinion Newsletter

This approach does not utilize acupuncture needles, but can be used in combination with acupuncture.  The  results are typically rapid, with our goal being a 60-100 percent decrease in tenderness within a minute of treating a painful area.

Micro-current Therapy

Micro-current therapy (another no needle treatment) utilizes very small electric currents, imperceptible by most, to stimulate acupuncture points and other tissues.  There is no discomfort associated with this treatment, although a small number or people will notice a slight tingling or tickling sensation.  The effect is reduction of inflammation, muscle relaxation and the promotion of healing by normalizing your body's own electric current flow through your muscles, tendons, ligaments and other tissues.  Your body is electrical in nature and injuries can disrupt the normal flow of current through your muscles and other tissues.  When this occurs, normal function of the involved tissue is impeded and healing is slowed or prevented.  Micro-currents appear to promote healing by acting to normalize your body's bioelectric currents in the damaged tissues.  Micro currents can be a highly effective treatment.

Laser Therapy

Laser therapy, (another no needle treatment) in this case cold laser, also known as low level laser (LLL) therapy, is a well established treatment for soft tissue (muscles, ligament, tendon, etc.) injuries.  Laser can be used to stimulate acupuncture points, and what we call tendomuscular meridians.  Many people, when they think of medical lasers think of cutting tissues, or removing tattoos, etc.  These types of lasers are very different than LLL.  LLL is painless and results in no damage to tissue.  The only effects are positive ones.  The term cold laser, which is synonymous with LLL is not intended to suggest the treatment will feel cold, rather the name is derived from the fact it raises tissue temperature in the area of treatment only minimally.  Typically you will feel only a mild, comfortable warm feeling from the heat produced by the laser.

Laser therapy increases circulation, promotes the healing of tissue, relaxes muscles, reduces inflammation and relieves pain.

Common Questions

Q: Do you refer too, or work with Chiropractors?

A: When indicated, combining Chiropractic care, Physical Therapy, Massage, Rolfing, etc., with our treatments can provide outstanding results.  The treatments I utilize are excellent stand alone treatments and I have found the majority of time no other treatment is necessary.  But my goal is to help you regain your health and live a pain free life.  Whatever referrals are necessary to help us achieve that goal, or to come as close as possible to that goal, will be utilized.  Put another way,  I am in favor of whatever resolves your pain, helps you heal the quickest, addresses the underlying problem if possible, and results in the least side effects.  Typically natural therapies have little, or in most cases, no side effects.

Q: How many treatments does it take?

A: This varies based on a variety of variables.  Some considerations include the duration of the problem, any associated underlying pathology, individual response to acupuncture, or other treatment we might be using, frequency of treatments and others.  Almost everyone begins feeling better with their first treatment, but maximum improvement may take longer and typically does.

The vast majority of people I treat are extremely happy with their results.  Take a look at our Testimonials page and our Video testimonials page.  Our initial consultation will provide the information we need to help determine a treatment plan that is best for you.

Q: Is there any research supporting the efficacy of acupuncture?

A: Yes, considerable.  Much of this is published in peer reviewed medical journals or is available online.  Excellent research has come from many sources including Duke University, Mayo Clinic, NIH, and many others.  The efficacy of acupuncture is well established, but like any treatment, acupuncture works very well for certain problems and not so well for others.

Q: Does Insurance cover your services?

A: Many insurances do cover our services. Some do not.  We are also accepting VA patients as we are an authorized vender for the VA.  If you have questions about your insurance coverage you can check directly with your insurance company or we will check for you.  Just give us a call if you would like our assistance.  We also offer payment plans that have no finance charge.

If you have questions please email me at, or come in for a free consultation.  We all deserve to live a life free of pain.  If you are in pain, at the end of your rope, it may be time for you to try something new.  It just may be the best decision you have made in a long time.
